You no longer need to take a day off to queue at the Migrant Workers Office. OWWA now lets you apply for or renew your membership online, wherever you're working, and pay through GCash.
Why it's worth keeping active
OWWA membership is your link to the government's welfare safety net while you're abroad and when you come home. Active members can get emergency repatriation, legal help, welfare and medical assistance, scholarships for dependants, and livelihood support.
The difference shows up when you need it. Under the Balik Pinas! Balik Hanapbuhay! livelihood programme, for example, active members can get ₱20,000, while inactive members get ₱10,000 at most.
Membership costs US$25 and is valid for two years.
What to prepare
Have clear photos or scans of:
- Your Philippine passport, valid for at least six more months
- Proof of employment: any one of your employment contract, your latest payslip, your work permit or visa, or a certificate of employment dated this year
Make sure the name on your proof of employment matches your passport exactly. Mismatches are a common reason applications get held up.
The steps
- Go to membership.owwa.gov.ph and fill in the online application form.
- Upload your passport and proof of employment.
- Wait for a verification email from OWWA. It contains your Payment Reference Number (PRN). Check your spam folder if it doesn't arrive.
- Pay with GCash: open the app, tap Bills, choose Government, then OWWA, and enter your PRN. GCash waived its fee for OWWA payments until 16 July 2026. A small convenience fee may now apply, and the app shows it before you confirm.
- Get your receipt. OWWA emails a confirmation with a downloadable Acknowledgment Receipt. This is your proof of active membership.
Save that receipt somewhere you won't lose it, such as your email, your phone and a cloud folder. You may need it when you apply for assistance.
Other ways to renew
- The OWWA mobile app, where you can also check whether your membership is active or inactive
- In person at the MWO in your host country, or at an OWWA regional office when you're home
A quick habit
Put a reminder in your phone for a month before your membership expires. Renewing on time costs the same as renewing late, and it means you're never caught without cover when something goes wrong.
Fees and steps can change. Check owwa.gov.ph for the latest.
